Punit’s encouragement on my birthday had led me to bring up the subject with her. And it had not gone as I wanted it to go. She was still far from me, if not farther. Nothing seemed right.

I didn’t meet any of my friends. I didn’t spend time watching movies or playing games. I stopped going to the mess to eat. The hair on my head and face was crying for a trim. My body was growing weak. After I had given up on food, I started forgetting even water. I was lost, and followed just one routine. Wake up, get ready for college, look at her all day in class, not utter a single word to anyone, return home and finally sleep so that I could continue with my routine the next day. Not a single change.

That day I tried to eat, but couldn’t. It had been four days since anything had gone inside my mouth. I didn’t even care to get some liquid in my belly. The very next day, I went close to her seat and said, “I can’t continue my life like this.”

“How did you manage for so long?” She had a question for me. I stayed silent.

Vishwa, Vikram and Ankur surrounded my desk. She tried to ask them to stop. However, they were angry, seeing me falling back to my old ways. I had an argument with them. They provoked, discussed, fought. I finally had to leave the class just to preserve my sanity.

“What happened?” Punit asked as he saw me coming out of the classroom.

“Nothing,” I said.

“Just tell me what they said?”

I recounted the incident. We were at the entrance of Sachai Mata Temple. He said, “Let’s go inside for a few moments. You will feel good.”

“You are free to go. I will wait for you outside the gate.”

“Why?”

“You know that I never visit temples.”

“Start now. Everything will be fine.”

How could I explain the relation between the supreme power of the universe and me? God and I had an old enmity. I had dreamt of several things in my life and God had tried his best to never give them to me.

“What are you thinking? Come fast,” he almost shouted at me.

I looked at the building that housed god. I had tried almost everything to convince Nimisha. Nothing had worked so far. Maybe, this was the last thing I could do to get her – fold my hands in front of my enemy. The temple was decorated for the occasion of Navratra. I took off my shoes, washed my hands, touched the first stair of the temple and went in. It was a lovely temple, shining from one end to another. I clanged the bell hard and moved towards the idol of the goddess. I folded my hands and closed my eyes reverently. The goddess appeared in front of me.

“Hello goddess,” I said. “I’ve not cared to worship you for long now. Still I need a favour from you.”

“You did not care about me,” she said with a smiling face.
